Brownings Farm

‘The Moat’ an Ancient Scheduled Monument

The Moat

The lake downstream from Moat overflow

The farm has an ancient moat. This dates back to between 1250 and 1350AD. Discovery of roof tiles and charred layers suggest the presence at some time of a timber building.  Today the moat forms part of a water system that is between a feeder pond and the lake which flows into the River Arun.

The Moat at Brownings is a Grade II Listed Scheduled Monument.  It is a very rare site for West Sussex
